Voir occupies a prominent hilltop location in Balmoral, offering sweeping, panoramic views across Brisbane. The vantage point provides a remarkable sense of elevation, with clear sightlines eastward toward the city, north to Hamilton, west to the bay, and south to the surrounding suburbs. The site’s commanding position gives the impression of overlooking the entire cityscape.
The brief for Voir was to create a collection of residences, each maximizing the unparalleled views offered by the site’s elevation. The project required a design that would orient every residence to take full advantage of the view, creating a living experience that embraced the landscape in every direction.
Our design approach for Voir emphasized a deliberate orientation of the six residences, spread across three storeys, angled approximately 15 degrees from the site center to align directly with the optimal view. Unlike conventional unit designs, Voir’s residences are uniquely positioned, each angled to capture the expansive cityscape. The street-facing side of the building features a dramatic four-storey spiral staircase, leading up to a shared rooftop space. This rooftop serves as a communal retreat, complete with resort-style amenities, allowing residents to enjoy unobstructed city views.
Inspired by the structure of an acacia tree, the building's form features a slender base with larger, cantilevered upper levels extending outward, much like the acacia’s branches. This design not only enhances the visual impact of the structure but also reinforces a sense of rooted stability while reaching out to embrace the surrounding views. The overall effect is one of elevation and openness, providing residents with an immersive connection to the landscape and a distinctly elevated living experience.
